Am a 50 yr old housewife, with one handicapped adult at home, all other children have grown and moved on. I am unable to work because of 1 vehicle in household, and do not have any relatives or friends nearby to carpool etc.. with. Do not live on busline. I am without heat and many times without food. Do not qualify for assistance, do not get enough for the handicapped individual or from the spouse to make ends meet. I want very much to try to better my life, have a little more, but just try and fail, and just about ready to give up. I already take meds for depression. Can anyone tell me how I can help myself get a head?

You say there is a handicapped adult at home. Do you need to stay home to be with him or her, or can you leave him for the day? It can be a challange, but a way to deal with the car situation is if you can find a job in a similar location and time period as your spouse, and then carpool. I've been carpooling for over 2 years, and we're also away from any bus lines. For that matter, relatives and friends are not the only options for carpooling, if you get to know your neighbors. It used to be that neighbors relied on each other far more than we do now, and many neighbors would be glad to help, if it's not too inconvenient. Another option is if you have any artistic ability at all -- you can make crafty things, and then sell them at bazaars, farmer's markets, or such-like. That does take a bit of initial investement, and booths also cost some money, so research that first to make sure you could make a profit. But those often run on weekends, when perhaps you could use the car. Or, is there something you can do for neighbors for pay? Cleaning houses is how I paid my way through college, and if yardwork or landscaping is something you like to do, you're still young enough for any of those. If all else fails, offer to volunteer somewhere, if they provide transportation. That won't help with the money situation (unless it works into a job), but it should help with the self-worth. You can provide a benefit and helping others always helps us too. |

Could you help your spouse to try to make a better living? My other main suggestion would be to see if you could get counselling as that may be better than asking an on-line Q & A site. Lastly, do you have stuff that you could sell on kijiji or eBay? That's another idea possibly. Good luck with whatever choices you make. |
